Short MBTI Test — Your 4-Letter Type in 12 Questions

Who this is for: For people who want the 16-type conversation without the 93-question questionnaire — two minutes, one letter pair at a time.

A fast 12-question MBTI-style sorter: four Jungian dichotomies, your 4-letter type, and a strength bar per letter.

Quick answer: Four Jungian dichotomies — E/I (energy), S/N (information), T/F (decisions), J/P (structure) — combine into 16 four-letter types. This 12-question sorter (3 votes per letter) returns your type with strength bars; near-50% letters mean you're genuinely balanced, which is itself useful to know.

Scores are self-report snapshots for reflection and conversation — not clinical assessments.

How does this short MBTI test work?

The MBTI sorts preferences on four dichotomies from Jung's theory: Extraversion vs Introversion (where energy comes from), Sensing vs Intuition (what information you trust), Thinking vs Feeling (how you decide) and Judging vs Perceiving (how you handle structure). The official instrument runs 90+ items and costs money; this short version asks 12 — three per dichotomy — and reports your 4-letter type with a strength bar on each letter, so a weak letter shows as weak. Answer all three on one side and that letter reads 100% (e.g. an all-left run sorts to ESTJ); alternate within a pair and you'll see the honest 67%/33% split. It's the same dichotomy logic at lower resolution — great for orientation, not a substitute for the official assessment.

Common uses

  • Getting your type fast before a team workshop that assumes you know it
  • Testing whether the 16-type lens is even useful for you
  • Comparing letters with a partner or teammate on specific disagreements
  • Deciding whether the full official assessment is worth taking

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the official MBTI?
No. The official Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a proprietary instrument from the Myers-Briggs Company with 90+ items and professional interpretation. This is an independent 12-question sorter using the same public-domain Jungian dichotomies — inspired by the framework, not affiliated with or licensed from the trademark holders.
How accurate is a 12-question MBTI test?
Directionally useful, individually fuzzy. Three questions per dichotomy means each answer moves a letter 33% — one wobble flips it. That's why every letter shows its strength bar: trust your confident letters, treat close calls as 'both, context-dependent.' If a result feels wrong, retake once; stable doubt usually means you're genuinely near the middle.
What do the four letters mean?
E/I is your energy source (outer world vs inner world); S/N is your information trust (concrete facts vs patterns and possibilities); T/F is your decision mode (logic vs values and people); J/P is your structure preference (plans vs options). Sixteen combinations — from the ${mbtiAllSecond} quiet idealist profile to the ${mbtiAllFirst} organizer profile.
Can your MBTI type change?
The preferences are fairly stable in adulthood, but measured type shifts for around half of people when retested — mostly on letters near the middle. Treat your type as a current reading with error bars, not a permanent tattoo.
Is MBTI scientifically valid?
Mixed. Critics correctly note poor test-retest stability and the forced dichotomies (most people are near middles, not poles); defenders value its vocabulary for team conversations. Academic personality psychology mostly uses the Big Five instead — this site has a free Big Five test for exactly that reason.
Why only 12 questions?
Resolution trade-off: 12 questions keeps completion high and gives each dichotomy a clean 3-vote majority. If you want the full-resolution version, the official assessment exists; if you want the scientifically favored alternative, our Big Five test runs in 3 minutes.
